Fredrika Newton

Fredrika Newton joined the Black Panther Party as a youth member in 1969. She first met Huey P. Newton in 1970, marrying him eleven years later in 1981. They lived together until Newton's death in 1989 with Ms. Newton establishing the Huey P. Newton Foundation, a non-profit educational organization, in 1993. Serving as the Foundation's President, she operates the community-based programs, which include literacy, voter outreach and health-related components.

Additionally, the Foundation is the copyright holder of the repository of the Black Panther Party archives at Stanford University, a collection that includes all her husband's papers, photographs, correspondence and personal records. Along with David Hilliard, former Black Panther chief of staff and author of This Side of Glory (Little, Brown), Ms. Newton also coordinated the high-profile Black Panther Legacy Tour, an Oakland city tour that has been featured in the New York Times, CNN, MTV, NBC, ABC, CBS, and NPR. Additionally, Ms. Newton has served as a consultant on several Black Panther theatrical productions, most notably "A Huey P. Newton Story," Roger Guenveur Smith's acclaimed play that has had successful runs in San Francisco, Los Angleles, and New York at the Public Theater. The play will make its television review on STARZ in February, 2000 and shall be directed by Spike Lee, who has been working closely with Ms. Newton. Fredrika Newton currently resides in Oakland, California with David Hilliard.
